Choosing fire resistant plants for Colorado requires more than finding species labeled drought tolerant. This guide compares 100 perennials, groundcovers, shrubs, and trees by ignitability, water needs, elevation, mature size, and recommended defensible-space placement. Why Colorado’s Planting Zones Are Changing


Before we dive into the plant lists, it is important to understand how Colorado’s changing climate is reshaping where different plants can thrive. Colorado’s planting conditions are changing. As temperatures rise, the areas where plants can survive are shifting northward, upward in elevation, or into cooler microclimates. Quaking aspens are already experiencing heat and drought stress in warmer portions of their range, while new aspen growth has been documented establishing upslope after severe wildfires. Across the Southwest, climate models also show suitable habitat for Joshua trees and some pinyon-juniper ecosystems shifting toward cooler, higher, and more northern locations. They are not literally marching toward Colorado, but they clearly show how quickly yesterday’s dependable planting zones can become tomorrow’s climate stress zones.


You can see these changes during a single road trip. Drive from Arizona toward Colorado and the landscape moves through desert plants, pinyon-juniper woodlands, grasslands, foothill forests, montane forests, and alpine environments. Elevation, temperature, slope, sunlight, wind, soil, and available moisture can change dramatically within a relatively short distance. Those same differences can occur between two Colorado properties located only a few miles apart.

That is why long-term landscape design should consider more than a plant’s current USDA hardiness zone. We need to ask whether vegetation can survive future heat, drought, wildfire conditions, heavy rain, flooding, pests, fungal pressure, intense sunlight, drying winds, and the specific elevation of the property. Colorado is expected to experience continued warming, more extreme fire-weather conditions, and an increased risk of heavy rainfall events that may contribute to flooding.


No plant is truly fireproof. However, some species contain more moisture, produce less combustible debris, and ignite less readily than others. Dense, resinous plants such as juniper can ignite quickly and burn with intense heat, acting almost like kindling when wildfire reaches a property.


Plants are a huge part of the climate solution. Through photosynthesis, vegetation removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and stores carbon in plant material, roots, and soil. Healthy soil with greater organic matter can hold more water, improve infiltration, reduce erosion, and help landscapes remain cooler and more resilient during heat, drought, and heavy rainfall. Landscaping alone cannot reverse climate change, but healthy vegetation and living soil play meaningful roles in both climate mitigation and adaptation.

Firewise landscaping does not mean ripping every plant out of the ground and replacing the entire property with rock. The first 0–5 feet surrounding a structure should remain primarily noncombustible, but the rest of the landscape can include thoughtfully selected and properly spaced vegetation. The goal is to use rock, pathways, patios, irrigated planting islands, rainwater-capturing soil, and lower-ignitability plants together so the property remains beautiful, ecologically productive, and less likely to carry fire toward the home.


Understanding the Firewise Plant Index


Colorado State University’s current plant guidance uses an ignitability scale from 0 to 10:

  • 10: Lowest ignitability

  • 9–9.5: Excellent

  • 8: Good

  • 5–7.5: Moderate; generally better in outer areas

  • 0–4: Higher concern near structures

  • NR: No dependable numerical rating is available


CSU recommends prioritizing plants rated 8, 9, or 10 in landscaped areas located 5–30 feet from a structure. However, no plant is fireproof. Plant spacing, irrigation, pruning, mature size, drought stress, and accumulated dead material can all significantly affect how vegetation behaves during a wildfire. Because CSU ratings may be updated over time, always check the current CSU fire-resistance index before selecting plants.

Trees provide shade, cooling, habitat, and long-term carbon storage, but their mature size makes placement and maintenance especially important. Many deciduous trees have moderate Firewise ratings and belong farther into Zone 3: as a general guide, an index of 8 indicates about 30 feet or more from a structure, 7 indicates 40 feet, 6 indicates 50 feet, and 4 indicates approximately 70 feet or more. You must also remove ladder fuels—shrubs, tall grasses, low branches, and smaller trees that allow fire to climb from the ground into the canopy—while keeping branches pruned away from roofs and removing deadwood. If a large tree catches fire and falls or drops burning branches or falls onto the home, it can undo much of the protection created throughout the rest of the landscape.

How to Choose Fire-Resistant Plants for Colorado by Defensible Space Zone


Firewise landscaping in Colorado begins with placing vegetation according to its distance from the home.
